December has been an interesting homeschool month. We started out with two weeks of school, then took two weeks off (one for my surgery and one for Christmas traveling) and then rounded out the month with one more week.
It was great having a break, but all breaks mean having to start back up again after having time off. I was afraid it would be difficult to go from days full of free time spent playing with new Christmas presents to sitting and reading and spelling and doing math problems. Thankfully, the transition went fairly smoothly and we are back into the full swing of all things school.
This past month, we concluded our Flying Creatures segment on birds and began the section on bats. More about bats next month, but my-oh-my are they interesting little creatures.
In American History, we are studying the thirteen colonies, the geography of the United States and state capitals.
A huge highlight for the kids has been me purchasing the complete Liberty's Kids set. This is an animated made for PBS series on American history. Clink on the link above to read more about it and to read about the incredible cast of actors that came together to do the voices. The kids love these and if you check Amazon, you may be able to find the box set of 6 DVDs (40 episodes) for over half off, as I did, if a corner of the box in crumpled. Thank you, sister, for cluing me in!!
Also in December, we made snowflakes, listened to the life story and music of Tchaikovsky, the story and music of Peter and the Wolf (thanks, Mary Grace), made pinecone-peanut butter-bird seed bird feeders and some days...even did school in our pajamas. Ah, the joys of homeschooling.
It was another good month. I know homeschooling gets hard sometimes. We've been there. I don't know if it's Sam's age and Sadie's interest in something new (doing "school" for the first time) or what. I'm bracing for tough times, though. I know they're out there. So far this year it's been smooth sailing and I am thankful for that.
The month of December... another 4 out of 5 pencils.
Homeschooling in your pajamas rates 5 out of 5 pencils in my book! :)
ReplyDeleteYour new header is beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteWe watched liberty kids before Christmas, and are starting 'flying Creatures' this week. If only your cooking skills will somehow become a part of my schedule! I think I will somehow incorporate those state birds in our January studies. Oh, I think the header is beautiful too. :)
ReplyDeleteI wasn't familiar with Liberty Kids. Looks great, I'll wrangle myself a copy. Been poking around and finding other interesting things here at your blog. I'll be back...
