The garden has actually slowed down some, so now is the time to tackle non-garden projects before the garden demands harvesting and preserving attention.
Jamey's parent's garden
During this "lull", we've been doing some babysitting for friends and cousins, a little summer school here and there, time spent with extended family (all these photos), chasing and holding chicks, and staying cool in our kiddie pool.
My father-in-law preparing his famous barbecue chicken over the barbecue pit he built (with his special spray).
I'm really excited to get a copy of it into my own hands because it's a compilation of all my favorite recipes and to have them all in one place will be so nice. I will be sharing it with you all, too, once it's finished, so stay tuned. It won't be flashy, but it will be practical and pretty. And, don't worry, I'll be looking out for your budget, too:-).
Kids galore.
So, until next time, hop over here and check out the guest post my kids, Sam and Sadie, wrote.
Happy summering, friends!
Love,

Wow. What a party! I love the tractor car thing!
ReplyDeleteThat all looks wonderful - can you post some more about the bbq pit - it looks great. Can you tell how it works and how they made it (if that's not too hard)?
ReplyDeleteThanks.
It's pretty much what you see above. Coals lay underneath at ground level. He turns the spit for even barbecuing and the spray he uses is a mixture of vinegar, salt, butter and water. It makes for amazing flavor and meat that falls off the bone.
DeleteThanks - I'll show my husband and hope he builds one.
Deletelot of fun...your grass is so green
ReplyDeleteWe need rain in our parts of the world..
Enjoy your blog.
That all looks so wonderful. The barrel kid car is awesome. The garden is plush and the grill is just perfect. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeletegrilled chicken, fresh veggies and kid's playing...nothing better! This has nothing to do with your post...but I have a question for you...how long do fresh eggs keep? We buy them from a gal who works with my hubby (she has her own chickens) I usually use them up within 2 weeks, but we were gone for a week and I don't want to thow out perfectly good eggs. Thank you for your help!

Here's a short, helpful article from Mother Earth News about using and storing eggs. They say they'll keep for several months (refrigerated). Ours never stick around that long, but I'd trust their thoughts on the matter...http://www.motherearthnews.com/relish/using-storing-eggs-tips-zb0z12zalt.aspx
DeleteI just found your site and have enjoyed poking around a bit in it. I laughed the most at your post on canning overload disorder. I marvel a little that while I go to all that effort to put up delicious and nutritious food, during the bustle of getting it done, I'm not all that picky about what we eat. Maybe it is the exhaustion talking, or perhaps the desire not to cook ANYTHING else. Whatever the cause, I understand the disorder completely. And I'm 100% convinced that you cannot own enough kitchen towels during canning season.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the info about the eggs...I will look it up. I happened to see the lady who we get our eggs from today....she told me a couple of foxes killed all their chickens. It brought tears to my eyes...I feel so bad for them. She said they have some babies and are starting over. :(
ReplyDeleteThank's again,
Janet
